McCombs Defends Title at International Case Competition
For the second consecutive year, a team of McCombs undergrads (pictured from left to right: Paul Albrecht, Mark Rogers, Haley Robison, Dietrich Schmidt) took first place at the Marshall International Case Competition at USC. “The biggest takeaway for me is branding Texas as an international juggernaut when it comes to our business school and our university,” said Mark Rogers, a BHP finance senior. “Texas is a team that should be revered, as we have won four world championships for McCombs in the last year alone. Being able to perpetuate that feeling of, ‘Uh oh, Texas just walked in … I sure hope they aren’t in our bracket for the competition,’ is what has driven me to excel for the past few years in the international arena.”
Lavie Awarded Sloan Fellowship
Dovev Lavie, assistant professor of management, received a Sloan Industry Studies Fellowship by the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation, the foundation announced Feb. 19. The fellowship is given to scholars that show exceptional promise in the early stages of their careers to contribute to the advancement of knowledge, as well as to U.S. industrial development and economic competitiveness. Each fellow receives a grant of $45,000 for a two-year period, administered by his or her institution.
Texas Exes honor Academic Advisor at McCombs
Five academic advisors who have had an effective, positive influence on the educational experience of students, including Brent Winkelman from McCombs, have been selected to be honored with the Texas Exes’ James W. Vick Award for Academic Advising. The ceremony was held in the Alumni Center on March 7. These unique awards are student nominated and student selected. Each recipient received a certificate and a check for $500 funded through the President’s Office. “Academic advisors are college students’ friends, family, counselors and mentors,” said Khushboo Bansal, chair of the student selection committee. “All the recipients this year are exceptional candidates that clearly go above and beyond the call of duty to help serve their students.”
Hicks, Owner of Rangers and Stars, Turned Passion Into Profession
Don’t worry about your first job because it won’t be your last, advised Tom Hicks, chairman and CEO of Hicks Holdings, at his Feb. 27 VIP Distinguished Speaker Series talk. “Be sure you do something where you have fun.” As owner of the Texas Rangers and Dallas Stars, Hicks, an avid sports fan, definitely has fun. He also follows another piece of his own advice—“pick an area of business that excites you”—when speaking of his focus on leveraged buyouts (LBOs). Get the full story.

McCOMBS IN THE NEWS
Equity Office Property's Status a Source of Speculation National Real Estate Investor, Feb. 15, 2007
Equity Office Property Trust’s packed portfolio was the recent source of struggle in the biggest buyout in American real-estate history. The Blackstone Group conquered the competition to take over EOP, causing market observers to question how Blackstone will deal with EOP’s assets. “I would be surprised if [EOP] stays independent,” said Jay Hartzell, associate finance professor and associate director of the Real Estate Finance & Investment Center at McCombs. “As a portfolio manager, it wouldn’t make much sense to leave this as a stand-alone. You would want to integrate all you could with whatever other assets you were considering holding.” Get the full story.

Sarina Hickey

Sarina Hickey (BBA '07) Finds A Family in the BHP as well as her New Employer
Sarina Hickey, a Business Honors and Finance major set to graduate in May, spent her formative years in a small Texas town, where the only major bank serving the area was Merrill Lynch. As a child, she remembers telling her father, one day she’d be CEO of that bank, before she even knew what a CEO actually was.
Sarina is on her way to reaching that goal. In August she will move to New York City to launch her career in investment banking with Merrill Lynch, as a starting analyst in the company’s equity capital markets division.
A bright and ambitious student, Sarina’s interests center on the fast-paced investment banking industry and global travel. While at McCombs she has interned with a brand label production company in Turkey and studied in Spain and Australia.
She got her first taste of Merrill Lynch during a summer internship through Sponsors for Educational Opportunity, a competitive worldwide internship organization providing minority students opportunities to work with top-ranked investment banks and meet industry leaders. Through that program, Sarina’s desire to work in investment banking and begin her career in New York City was solidified.
“Everything you could possibly ever want to do, you can in New York. During my summer there, I went to a Broadway show every Saturday.”
She credits the Business Honors Program for pushing her towards these internship and study abroad opportunities and helping land her dream job. “The students are incredibly motivated and dedicated, and the faculty and staff are all really welcoming,” she says.
For Sarina, the Business Honors Program provided a nurturing environment, leading her to seek a similar atmosphere with her future employer. During her internship, Sarina had the opportunity to meet and talk with officials from many top banks. Ultimately though, she would accept Merrill Lynch’s bidding.
“They really catered to me. I was able to meet with the CIO and with heads of international departments. And they urge their employees to work abroad. They’ve made me feel like a part of their family,” says Sarina.
