Executive Education Launches Energy Finance Program in Houston
Texas Executive Education will offer an innovative Energy Finance Certificate program at its Federal Reserve Bank campus in Houston (left), beginning this fall. Faculty from the McCombs School of Business, the Cockrell School of Engineering and the Jackson School of Geosciences will partner to teach courses designed to offer executives and managers an in-depth look at economic strategy, business valuation and finance specific to the energy industry. "The program offers a unique opportunity for managers to study current topics in the complex field of energy finance," said Chantal Delys, assistant dean for Texas Executive Education. MPA Alum Receives AICPA Sells Award
Lina Dimachkieh, MPA '06, was recently awarded the 2006 Elijah Watt Sells Award by the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants. The award is presented annually to the 10 CPA candidates earning the highest cumulative scores on the four sections of the CPA exam. Dimachkieh is currently pursuing a law degree from Harvard Law School. Get the full story.
Accounting Students Get Primer on Sports Ownership at Lyceum
If you've ever dreamed of owning your own professional sports team, then Gary Woods, president of McCombs Enterprises, has a few words of advice. "It's the most visible business you could possibly have, you have so many constituencies to please," said Woods, who spoke before a large audience of McCombs accounting students on Sept. 12 as part of the Fall 2007 Lyceum Speakers Series. Construction at Executive Education Center Reaching Finishing Stages
Construction of the AT&T Executive Education and Conference Center is moving. The facility is on schedule for a "soft" opening in July of next year, followed by the official opening in August, according to Will Shepherd (right), senior project manager.
McCombs Ranked Highly by Hispanic Business, Fortune Small Business, Expansión
Academic programs at the business school recently have been touted by three publications in special rankings issues. In Hispanic Business magazine’s annual Top 10 Best Business Schools for Hispanics, the Texas MBA program was ranked No. 2 (Stanford was No. 1); Expansion magazine, a business publication from Mexico, ranked the full-time MBA program No. 23 worldwide in its survey for its Best Global MBAs for Mexicans issue. In Fortune Small Business, McCombs was highlighted in its feature on America’s Best Colleges for Entrepreneurs. "With its $100,000 top prize, UT Austin’s global Moot Corp business plan contest is among the most respected B-school competitions," said the Fortune story. "For grad students who would rather buy a business than start one, the student-run MBA Investment Fund, a private investment company, completes the necessary due diligence, under the eye of finance lecturer Sanford Leeds (left)." Nearly 200 people gathered recently in Dallas to celebrate the publication of the book, "Internal Auditing: Assurance and Consulting Services." The co-authors, including Urton Anderson, chair of the Department of Accounting, came from around the country to show off their pride and joy. Why is there such rejoicing? Pérez-González Research Links Firm Success to CEO's Personal Life Wall Street Journal, Sept. 5, 2007
Research from Francisco Pérez-González, assistant professor of finance, examines the personal lives of executives to discover how their businesses might be affected by family tragedies. With two co-authors, Pérez-González referenced Danish government data on thousands of businesses to study the links between family deaths of CEOs and profitability over the course of 10 years. In the paper, the authors find that CEO family deaths are strongly correlated with declines in firm operating profitability, investment and sales growth. Get the full story. Liz Yant Named Department's 2007 Texas Star
 Liz Yant (BBA '77, MPA '78) and former chair of Accounting Department Ross Jennings.
Three years ago, the Accounting faculty established a new award, the McCombs Accounting Program Texas Star Award, to be given annually to a friend of our department and programs in recognition of continuing support over a period of years.
This year's honoree is Liz Yant, BBA '77, MPA '78 and partner with PricewaterhouseCoopers. The award was presented at the MPA commencement ceremony this past May.
Yant has been a very active member of both the college and department advisory councils for many years. As an advisory council member, Yant has given unselfishly of her time to support the activities of the department and the college.
Yant is also known to many of our graduates as an untiring recruiter of our students into all areas of PricewaterhouseCoopers. Recently, she has also been instrumental in creating a new endowment, the PricewaterhouseCoopers Excellence Fund in Accounting, which is funded by generous gifts from our friends and alumni at PricewaterhouseCoopers.
The Accounting Program congratulates Yant on her many contributions to our program and recognizes her with the McCombs Accounting Program Texas Star for 2007.  Investment Opportunity
