Culture Has Changed Since Sarbanes-Oxley, but Problems Remain After the accounting scandal at Enron came to light in 2001, the federal government was compelled to conjure a definitive and firm response. When, the following year, Congress passed the Sarbanes-Oxley Act—the most drastic piece of legislation in recent years to affect corporate governance, financial disclosure and public accounting—the business world scrambled to comply with the new restrictions. Erica Grundish has dreams of one day working for Frito-Lay. "Think about it…all those chips and sodas just waiting for me," she said with a smile. "Seriously though, they seem to be so marketing driven. It's exciting to see that and it just seems like a great place to start my career."
A career that would not be possible without the scholarship support Erica has received as a McCombs student. Grundish, a Business Honors Program junior majoring in marketing and minoring in advertising, is the 2005 recipient of the Karl and Helen McGinnis Endowed Scholarship.
Receiving the scholarship enabled her to make school a top priority and pursue jobs and internships that increase her chances of getting a job after graduation.
"We, as students, have the responsibility to make sure that the McCombs tradition of excellence continues," said Grundish. "Without the financial support, I would have not been able to take several key internships. I also would have missed out on student organizations and the chance to interact with diverse groups of people, hone my skills and work on my future."
A future that hopefully contains all the chips and sodas Grundish wants.
