President Bush Picks Alumna Martinez Tucker for Education Post
President Bush announced this week that he will nominate Sara Martinez Tucker, MBA ’79 and McCombs Hall of Fame recipient, to serve as undersecretary of education.  Martinez Tucker is currently the president and CEO of the Hispanic Scholarship Fund (HSF), a position she will leave at the end of September in preparation for her move to Washington, D.C. The McCombs School welcomed four new Advisory Board Members this September: Joel V. Staff, Robert D. Duncan, James K. Malernee and Thomas W. Sharon AllenDeloitte's Allen Discusses Changing Workplace, Future of Accounting  
Sharon Allen, a baby boomer with 30 years of accounting and auditing experience, spoke Wednesday evening to a packed room of McCombs accounting students from Generation Y (those born in the 1980s and 1990s), and assured them her company understands the expectations they have about the workplace they will be a part of in the future. McCombs PPA Graduates Win AICPA Sells Award
Mark Danielson and William Leder, both 2005 graduates of the McCombs Professional Program in Accounting, have received the prestigious American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA) Sells Award for 2005. They are two of ten winners nationwide who completed testing during that year and earned the highest cumulative scores on the four sections of the Uniform CPA Examination on their first attempt at the exam, the AICPA announced September 12, 2006. After the Beijing Electric Power Corporation became independent of the Chinese government in 2003, they were thrust into a highly competetive market. For help adapting to this competitive marketplace, Beijing Electric turned to the Executive Education Program at the McCombs School of Business to create custom courses in marketing and customer service tailored to the needs of the company and its executives. Learn more about the custom program.

The McCombs School of Business recently welcomed the new freshman with fajitas, freebies and fun.  Many of the student organizations were on hand to discuss upcoming events and leadership, while the Office of Resource Development passed out free "Who is Hermes?" t-shirts to introduce the new students to McCombs School traditions.  So, Who is Hermes?

    Glover, AnneAnne & David Glover  When David Glover (BBA ’80) retired from a successful career in real estate,  his wife Anne (BBA ’81, MBA ’86) decided to put her MBA to work and build a business.  After nine months of researching start-ups and franchises, Anne discovered and jumped on a franchise opportunity—Massage Envy, a nationwide chain of membership-based massage therapy clinics much like a health club.

    “We wanted to get her [Anne’s] UT MBA back into action and we liked the business model found in Massage Envy," said David. She found out about the opportunity and within two weeks she was choosing locations for the first of her now four stores.”

    Those locations, along with good therapists, have been key to their success. Her River Oaks and Galleria stores are currently No. 1 and No. 2 in the city among all Massage Envy franchises in number of massages given and total store revenue, and are nationally ranked in the top ten.  And she is about to open one more store. 

    Another key to her success has been latching onto an industry that is experiencing high national growth (Massage Envy just got rated one of the top five retail concepts in the United States by the International Council of Shopping Centers).  Fourteen percent of Fortune 500 companies now offer massage as an employee benefit, while individual consumers spend between $5 and $7 billion annually on massage therapy.

    “The franchise concept is perfect for a budding entrepreneur,” Anne said.  “Because you’re putting your name, money and reputation at risk an upcoming franchise with a solid business model is a less risky endeavor.  You can really be involved in the growth phase, but it probably has a reputation somewhere that helps you hedge your bets a little.”

    As to advice for new entrepreneurs?  “Find something you’re interested in,” said Anne, a self-proclaimed massage junkie.  “You need to make certain it’s a business you’re interested in and can be excited about.”

    And don’t be afraid to go back to the books.

    “I couldn’t have done this without the business discipline I learned at UT and the alumni support network.  From analysis to spreadsheets to theories, everything from my education played right into the number crunching and natural abilities I had to run a successful business,” said Anne.
