Cox Discusses False Interpretations of Adam Smith’s Writings Scholars have misinterpreted 18th century economist Adam Smith’s views, said Marketing Professor Eli Cox at the Oct. 17 Faculty Research Presentation Speaker Series. Smith wrote the oft-quoted “Wealth of Nations” in 1776, and incorrect interpretations include the idea that if we all act greedily, everything “comes out well in the wash—the invisible hand cleans up the mess.” Cox said that such interpretations pervert Smith’s original meaning that prudence—defined as “control of ourselves”—is the foundation upon which the wealth of nation is built. Paul Tetlock Op-Ed Examines Internet Gambling Legislation New York Times, Oct. 9, 2006 Paul Tetlock, assistant professor of finance, coauthored a New York Times op-ed that examined proposed legislation to shut down online gambling. Tetlock says the law would affect a form of Internet gambling that has worth to society—sites dealing in information markets. “For instance, we now have markets for predicting political and economic events, where you can wager on the monthly unemployment rate or the outcome of the presidential race,” Tetlock writes. “Why should we care? Because information markets, which essentially reflect the collective wisdom of savvy bettors, can help us make more accurate forecasts.” Read the editorial.
Prepare for Talent and Market Growth in Developing World, Mahajan Says The Economist, Oct. 5, 2006 Every year India produces about 2.5 million university graduates, including 400,000 engineers and 200,000 IT professionals. Kate Nanney Kate Nanney (BBA 2007) has already experienced many an alumni event in her role as director of alumni relations for the Texas Exes Student Chapter during her sophomore year in school. So when she officially becomes an alumna in a few months, she’ll know what to do!
And she’s looking forward to becoming one of YOU.
“I think it would be great to have more mechanisms for informal interaction among students and alumni,” says Nanney, a Business Honors student who’s also in UT’s challenging Plan II program. “I have often met alums at meetings and business functions, but the most interesting conversations happen in less formal settings.”
The featured student speaker at this month’s McCombs Advisory Council luncheon, Nanney talked about how the business school really enhanced her ability to communicate with diverse groups of people, a skill she knows will serve her well as she continues on a career path that will take her on a two-year stint with Teach for America and then on to law school.
“One of the best things about being in the McCombs School is interacting with other business students,” says Nanney. “These students are always taking on amazing internships and going for valuable leadership opportunities. They’re very driven.”
As Nanney moves from the student to the alumni ranks, there’s no telling how she’ll use those great networking skills and far-reaching McCombs network. “I’ve never been one to set the goals too far out, but when I see something that needs doing, I do it.”
